In case you missed it…. these are the highlights

Who are you? What is a cool fact about you that no one would know?

I am Jared Robin, the founder of RevGenius, a community dedicated to empowering sales and marketing professionals. My journey began in tech sales, which laid the foundation for my later transition into entrepreneurship. My career path has been diverse and interesting, from working in a Mexican restaurant to being a sales representative for a seed-stage company.

An intriguing fact about me that many people might not know is that I have won two International Fashion Film Awards in Copenhagen for Best International Fashion Film and Best Idea. I was also featured in ten International Fashion Film festivals with the same film. This accomplishment came while I was running a digital fashion magazine as a side hustle right after I broke into tech.

How Did You Get Into Sales?

My journey into sales was influenced by my father, who was a sales representative for Columbia Sportswear and other outerwear companies. I always admired his career path and knew that sales was a field I could potentially enter. However, my initial plan was to become an entrepreneur, and I saw sales as a fallback option.

When I was entering college, I chose to major in Supply Chain Management, as I was advised that it would help me understand the movement and operations of a product or service. After graduating, I realized I wasn’t ready to dive straight into entrepreneurship. I was more driven by the desire to move out of my parents’ house and start earning, so I quickly turned to my plan B: sales.

I took an internship in supply chain for Columbia Sportswear, trying to merge what my father did with what I was considering doing. However, I found it unfulfilling and felt that I wasn’t part of the lifeblood of the company. I believed that even an entry-level sales role would give me a better chance of feeling like I was contributing to the company’s growth.

“…So, I stepped into the world of sales, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It not only gave me a pathway to be entrepreneurial with a base salary, but it also opened up opportunities for growth and personal development…”

How Did Sales Change Your Life?

Sales has been a transformative journey for me, starting as a means to an end and evolving into a pathway of self-discovery and personal growth. It began with a job at FedEx, which marked the start of my professional career and gave me the financial independence I sought. However, the real change came when I joined a seed-stage tech company, where I faced numerous challenges that pushed me to my limits.

“…The pressure and stress from this role led to a period of intense anxiety, forcing me to confront my fears and embark on a journey of self-improvement. Sales taught me resilience, determination, and the ability to face failure as a stepping stone to success.…”

It shaped me into the person I am today, giving me a purpose, a direction, and the courage to chase my dreams. Despite the challenges, it’s a journey I wouldn’t trade for anything.

What’s your best advice to those considering a career in Sales?

If you’re considering a career in sales, my advice is to embrace the journey wholeheartedly. Sales is more than just selling; it’s about building relationships, understanding customer needs, and providing value. Respect the sales process and always prioritize your customers. Remember, success in sales is not just about closing deals, but about making a difference.

Never stop learning and evolving. Stay updated with the latest trends and techniques in the industry. And importantly, don’t fear failure or rejection. Use them as stepping stones to learn and grow. Sales is a rewarding career that offers endless opportunities for personal development. So, embrace the challenges, learn from your failures, and keep striving for success.
